Growing up can be a beautiful mess, and no book quite captures that as well as Judy Blume's Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret.

Writer/director Kelly Fremon Craig, who brought us the incredible The Edge of Seventeen, has adapted Blume's classic novel for the big screen. (Blume not only gave her blessing for the adaptation, but she has declared that the movie is even better than her own book(opens in a new tab).) Like the book, the '70s-set film centers on 11-year-old Margaret (Abby Ryder Fortson), who's just moved with her family to the New Jersey suburbs. As she tries to adjust to her new surroundings, she'll also have to confront the challenges of puberty. From sex-ed classes to buying bras, the trailer perfectly captures Blume's depiction of growing up — including a hilariously awkward attempt to buy pads.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret also stars Rachel McAdams, Elle Graham, Benny Safdie, and Kathy Bates.

Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret hits theaters April 28.
