Polestar 4 is an electric car that combines everything into one

Volvo's electric performance sub-brand Polestar has a new car, and this one checks a lot of boxes.

The Polestar 4, according to the company, is an electric performance SUV coupé, meaning it's a little sportier than Polestar 3, but still spacious and just tall enough to still be called an SUV.

Polestar always considered itself to be a performance brand, so it's good news that the Polestar 4 is actually pretty fast, with a maximum power output of 400kW (544hp) and a 0-100km/h time of 3.8 seconds. Yes, Tesla's Model Y – an obvious competitor to Polestar 4 – is a little faster with a 3.5 second 0-100km/h time, but the difference probably won't be a dealbreaker for most prospective buyers.

The Polestar 4 will be offered with one or two motors, and as regular and long range variants, with the latter having a 102kWh battery. The single-motor, long range version will have a rear-wheel drive, a 200kW (272 hp) power output and a (preliminary) WLTP range of 600 km. The dual motor, long range version will have a slightly shorter, 560 km range. Charging will be fast, with up to 200 kW DC and 22 kW AC charging available on all versions of the car.

Like other Polestar models, the Polestar 4 will have infotainment powered by Google's Android Automotive OS that supports over-the-air updates. Inside, you get a 15.4-inch at the center of the dashboard, a 10-2-inch driver display, a 14.7-inch head up display, and an optional Harman Kardon audio system with 12 speakers. Notably, that center display is landscape-oriented, unlike the portrait-oriented display in the Polestar 3.

The interior should be pretty spacious. The Polestar 4 is 4,839mm long, 2,139mm wide, and 1,544mm tall, which is just a little smaller than the Polestar 3. The company points out the "generous" interior proportions, which get even comfier for passengers thanks to reclining seats in the rear.

In terms of safety, the Polestar 4 has a driver assist system powered by twelve cameras, twelve ultrasonic sensors, and one radar on all versions of the car. The car also features the SuperVision Advanced Driver Assistance System from Mobileye. For increased safety, customers can get the optional Pilot Pack package which comes with Volvo's Pilot Assist driving assistance system, which keeps the car in the middle of the lane and maintains the distance to the car in front of you.

The Polestar 4 will launch in China first, with production starting in November 2023. It's coming to Europe, North America, and the Asia Pacific regions in early 2024. The pricing hasn't been finalized, but the car will cost about $60,000 in the U.S. and 60,000 euros in Europe.
