Logan may be gone, but the Roy family lives on in Succession. And in the wake of the media mogul's sudden death, everyone is scrambling to pick up the pieces and work out where they stand in the new order of things.
One of the victims of the patriarch's abrupt departure? Poor old Kerry (Zoe Winters), Logan's (Brian Cox) former assistant, who he was also in a relationship with at the time of his death, despite still being married to Marcia (Hiam Abbass).
In Season 4, episode 4 of the HBO series, Kerry makes a teary appearance at Logan's residence only to be promptly evicted by Marcia. But before she leaves, while picking up all her dropped belongings from the floor, Kerry whispers something to Roman (Kieran Kulkin), who is also present.
What happens with Kerry in episode 4?
After basically going straight into shock from Logan's death in episode 3, the Kerry who turns up to his home in episode 4 is a different person we saw on the plane.
"Hi," Kerry fumbles to a stony-faced Marcia. "I got your message but I just want to go...I have some things of mine upstairs I need."
Marcia stops her from going anywhere, instead handing over a bag of Kerry's possessions that's then promptly dropped on the floor. When Roman goes to help a crying Kerry, asking her if he has her private cell, she starts whispering to the youngest Roy sibling. It's difficult to catch everything she says, but we can clearly pick out the phrases "talking about getting married" and "he was making arrangements". Kerry then asks Roman to check on her request, and he promises that he will.
So what exactly does this mean, and how will it affect the story going forwards?
What does Kerry's whisper mean?
Kerry's message to Roman seems pretty clear: Logan at some point may have suggested to Kerry that they might get married, and that he was possibly making the necessary arrangements. Presumably she wants Roman to check if Logan had started any of the paperwork to divorce Marcia, or if he'd written down his plans or told them to anyone else.
Whatever Logan may have said, though, he obviously didn't live long enough to put his words into action — so why does it even matter?
Well, the first point is that Kerry clearly isn't going anywhere. She's not just going to go back "to her little apartment", as Marcia refers to it, and it seems clear that she's not about to let Logan's family sweep her under the rug. We also know from the final scene of episode 4 that Kendall has put in motion a PR plan to paint their father in a negative light, and make it seem like he, Roman, and Shiv (Sarah Snook) were already running things at Waystar Royco before he died. A part of that plan might involve bringing up the bad things Logan did, including "the Kerry situation", as Hugo (Fisher Stevens) refers to it.
Finally, we know that Kerry had aspirations to be an anchor at ATN, despite Tom (Matthew McFadyen) and Greg's (Nicholas Braun) feedback. She wants to be on camera. Is all of this pointing to a series of sit-down interviews in which Kerry reveals everything about the true nature of her relationship with Logan? It seems highly likely.
Succession is now streaming on HBO Max(opens in a new tab), with new episodes airing at 9 p.m. ET Sundays on HBO and HBO Max.
